The National Transportation Safety Board and .05

Yes, you read the number correctly, it is .05. The federal government wants the national BAC (blood alcohol content) limit to be lowered from the now-standard .08 to .05. While not seeming like such a huge change, given how humans process alcohol, it actually is.

Under the current .08 limit in most states, the average adult male can have about four drinks before passing the legal limit for intoxication. With the lowered standard it would be only two drinks. For women, the average woman could only consume one drink before being considered legally intoxicated.

Part of the reasoning for this request on the part of the feds is that alcohol can affect everyone differently and the relationship between crash risk and amount of alcohol consumed is still not completely understood.
